Indiana State Board of Education: 2026 Meetings, School Calendar Help & Public Comment

Indiana families searching for the “Indiana Board of Education” usually need one of two different things: the Indiana State Board of Education meeting schedule, or the calendar for a particular public school or school corporation. Those are not the same system.

The State Board handles statewide K–12 policymaking, standards, rules, waivers, accreditation and other state-level matters. Your child’s first day, fall break, spring break and last day of school normally come from the local school corporation or school, not from one statewide SBOE calendar.

Do not mix three different authorities: the Indiana State Board of Education sets and approves statewide education policy; the Indiana Department of Education administers state education programs and data; local school corporations and schools handle many family-facing matters such as local calendars, attendance and day-to-day operations.

Authority check

Indiana State Board vs. Department of Education vs. local school corporation

Indiana uses several education authorities, and their names can look interchangeable in search results. They are not. Knowing which one controls your task saves time and helps protect student information.

Authority Use it for Do not expect it to handle
Indiana State Board of Education State education policymaking, board rules, standards, waivers, accreditation matters, meetings, resolutions and adjudications. Your district’s snow day, bus stop, teacher contact or local fall-break date.

Meeting records

How to find an Indiana SBOE agenda, minutes or video

1

Open the official archive

Use the official SBOE archive rather than a search-result PDF so you can see the correct year and record type together.

2

Choose the meeting year

The archive separates 2026 from older years. Select the row matching the meeting you need.

3

Open agenda and materials before the meeting

The agenda shows scheduled items and links to memos, standards, waiver materials and other documents when available.

4

Use minutes for the official post-meeting record

A proposed agenda item is not the same thing as a final Board action. Check approved minutes or final resolutions and adjudications when the result matters.

5

Use Live Video for remote viewing

SBOE maintains a live-video page and links meeting recordings through the Indiana Education YouTube channel.

Public participation

How public comment works at Indiana State Board meetings

The public-participation procedure currently linked from the SBOE website allows comment on agenda items and general public comments at regular business meetings, with limits and exceptions for certain adjudications.

Register at the meeting

The procedure says the speaker registration sheet is customarily available at least 30 minutes before the meeting and closes five minutes before the meeting starts.

Know the time limit

Comments on agenda items are limited to five minutes; general public comments are limited to three minutes under the published procedure.

Prepare the required details

Registration asks for the speaker’s name, address, organization if applicable, and the topic to be discussed.

Some matters are excluded

The Board does not accept comments on specific adjudications governed by procedures that limit public participation.

Student privacy: a public meeting is not a private student-record channel. Do not read confidential student records, disability information, health information, discipline details, passwords or private family information into the public record.

Written public comment route

SBOE publishes SBOE_Comment@sboe.in.gov for public comment. Recheck the current meeting notice for any issue-specific deadline or procedure.

School calendar help

Where to find an Indiana school calendar

Indiana does not use the State Board’s meeting calendar as the student calendar for every public school. Local school corporations publish their own first day, breaks, holidays, e-learning days, professional-development days and last day.

State law still sets the instructional framework. IDOE’s current instructional-time summary says schools generally must conduct at least 180 instructional days, with minimum instructional-time rules and some statutory flexibility for qualifying schools.

1

Identify the school corporation

Use the student’s school name, city or ZIP code. Indiana GPS can help families locate schools and districts when the corporation name is unclear.

2

Open the local corporation’s official website

Look for “Calendar,” “School Calendar,” “Academic Calendar,” or “District Calendar.” Do not use an SBOE meeting date as a student attendance date.

3

Check the correct school year

For fall 2026 and spring 2027, make sure the page or PDF says 2026–27 before planning childcare, travel or work leave.

4

Recheck closures separately

Weather and emergency closures can change a local schedule after the annual calendar is published. Use the school corporation’s live alerts for same-day changes.

Indiana wording tip: many Indiana districts use the term school corporation. If you cannot find a “district calendar,” search the official site for “school corporation calendar” instead.

What the Board handles

Common Indiana SBOE topics you may see on an agenda

Recent 2026 agendas show why the State Board is different from a local board. Its business can include statewide academic standards, school accreditation, flexibility waivers, assessment matters, educator-preparation programs and Common School Loan items.

📚

Academic standards

The Board considers statewide K–12 standards and related policy materials.

🏫

Accreditation

Agendas can include non-public accreditation and teacher-preparation accreditation matters.

🧩

Flexibility waivers

Local school corporations may petition SBOE for certain flexibility from statute or regulation.

📊

Assessment & accountability

State assessment, accountability and performance-framework matters may appear in Board materials.

Public records

How to request Indiana State Board of Education public records

The SBOE contact page says public-record requests under Indiana’s Access to Public Records Act must be made in writing. The Board accepts requests by email or mail.

MailIndiana State Board of Education, 200 W. Washington Street, Room 228, Indianapolis, IN 46204
Non-color copy fee$0.10 per page, according to the current SBOE contact page.
Color copy fee$0.25 per page, with advance payment required for copying costs.

Start with posted records first: agendas, minutes, videos and resolutions are already organized in the meeting archive. A public-record request is most useful when the record you need is not available there.

Common mistakes

Fix the most common Indiana education search problems

“I need my child’s 2026–27 school calendar.” Go to the local school corporation or school website, not the SBOE meeting archive.
“I need the October State Board meeting.” The official 2026 archive lists October 21, 2026; verify the live page before attending.
“I found a Board agenda and assume the item passed.” Check minutes, a resolution or adjudication for the final record.
“I want to speak at the meeting.” Review public-participation rules and arrive early enough to register.
“I need a bus route or school closure.” Contact the local school corporation; SBOE does not operate local transportation.
“I need an educator license.” Use the Indiana Department of Education licensing route, not SBOE meeting materials.
“I need student records.” Start with the school or local corporation. Do not send private student information to a public-comment address.
