Tenafly Board of Education: School Calendar & Board Meetings

Tenafly Public Schools β€’ Bergen County, New Jersey

Tenafly BOE Meetings, School Calendar & Parent Help

If you’re looking for the Tenafly Board of Education, you may actually need one of several different district routes: the next public Board meeting, BoardDocs agenda, 2026–27 school calendar, trustee contact, student registration, transportation information or a school office.

Tenafly Public Schools keeps those services on separate pages. This independent guide organizes the official routes and explains the local details that matter before you attend a meeting, submit public comment, register a child or rely on a school-day schedule.

Tenafly school district vs. borough government: school calendars, student registration and BOE meetings belong to Tenafly Public Schools. Municipal services belong to the Borough of Tenafly and should not be mixed with Board of Education information.

Who handles what?

The Board is not the first stop for every school issue

The Board governs the district, adopts policy and acts on school business at public meetings. Day-to-day classroom, school and department questions normally move through staff and administrators first.

When Tenafly BOE agendas are posted and where minutes are kept

Tenafly provides a useful local timing rule: new agendas are posted after 4:00 p.m. on the Friday before the meeting and no later than 48 hours before the scheduled meeting. Current agendas and minutes are available through BoardDocs.

1

Open the current meeting page

Use the district’s January 2026–January 2027 meeting page so you start with the correct BoardDocs route.

2

Check after Friday at 4 p.m.

For a Monday meeting, Tenafly says the new agenda is posted after 4 p.m. Friday and no later than 48 hours before the meeting.

3

Use the agenda for planned business

An agenda shows matters expected to be considered. It does not by itself prove what the Board ultimately approved.

4

Return for approved minutes

Tenafly’s BOE FAQ notes that minutes are presented for approval at subsequent Board meetings before entering the public record.

5

Use the district video archive when useful

Current meeting videos are linked from the meeting chart. The district says older recordings not available online can be requested through OPRA.

Public participation

How public comment works at Tenafly BOE meetings

The district currently provides two public-comment opportunities during regular meetings: one for agenda items and another for school-related topics that are not on the agenda. The current meeting page also permits participation through the virtual meeting.

In person

An attendee may raise a hand and wait to be recognized during the appropriate public-comment period.

Virtual / Zoom

Virtual attendees may be unmuted when recognized. Tenafly also says comments can be submitted through Q&A and read during the public-comment period.

Name and address: Tenafly says spoken or written comments must include the participant’s name and address to be recognized.
Agenda comments: the first opportunity is for matters listed on the meeting agenda.
General school topics: another comment period is available later for other matters concerning the schools.
Work sessions: the district FAQ says work sessions are open to the public, but comments are not accepted and voting does not occur there.

Student privacy: public comment becomes part of a public meeting context. Do not disclose confidential student records, medical information, disability details, disciplinary information or private family matters when a school or district administrator can handle the concern privately.

Tenafly student registration: the local rules that matter

Tenafly uses the Genesis portal for online registration. The district makes two local rules especially clear: the family must be domiciled in Tenafly, with an Alpine exception for high-school enrollment, and elementary placement is based on available space rather than simply assigning a school by location.

1

Start in Genesis

Select the correct school year and complete the online registration process.

2

Finalize the submission

The district specifically tells families to click the green β€œFinalize Registration Information” button so the registration is actually received.

3

Prepare residency evidence

Tenafly requires two proofs of residency. A lease, deed, mortgage statement or tax bill is required, together with a utility bill or another accepted official document.

4

Prepare identity and school records

Families should prepare the student’s birth certificate, or passport and visa when applicable, guardian photo ID and previous transcripts or report cards.

5

Complete health documentation

The student health/physical examination form is due upon registration. For a student arriving from outside the United States, the district allows up to 30 days after the start date for that physical form.

Records not in English

Previous school records must be translated by a certified translation service and show the student’s name, school name and school address.

Additional documents when applicable

Custody documents, the most recent IEP and the most recent 504 plan should also be supplied when they apply to the student.

Registration help: Tenafly lists registrar@tenafly.k12.nj.us for assistance with student registration or document uploads.

2026 transportation

Who qualifies for Tenafly school transportation?

The district’s August 5, 2026 update says transportation is available to students who meet eligibility requirements based on the shortest walking distance between the student’s residence and the school attended.

πŸ“

Grades 5–8

Students living more than 2 miles from school meet the listed distance threshold.

πŸŽ“

Grades 9–12

Students living more than 2.5 miles from school meet the listed distance threshold.

How distance is measured: Tenafly says eligibility follows New Jersey Department of Education guidance and uses the shortest distance along public roadways or walkways between the home entrance and the nearest public school entrance. That measurement is for eligibility and may not match the actual bus or walking route.

Problem solving

Before taking a school concern directly to the Board

Tenafly publishes a specific chain of command for questions, comments and concerns. Following it can get a school-level problem to the person who can actually resolve it before the matter reaches the Board.

1

Teacher and/or principal

Begin closest to the issue, especially for classroom or individual-school concerns.

2

Department Supervisor

If the issue remains unresolved, move to the relevant district supervisor.

3

Assistant Superintendent

The district lists the Assistant Superintendent as the next level in its published escalation route.

4

Superintendent and/or Board trustees

Tenafly places district leadership and trustees after the preceding school and department steps.

The district’s BOE FAQ describes the Board as a later-stage route for school problems rather than the automatic first contact. That distinction can save families from sending a classroom or school-office issue to the wrong level.

Board records and OPRA

Meeting records, older videos and student privacy are different tasks

Current BOE records

Use BoardDocs and the meeting archive for current agendas and approved minutes.

Older recordings

Tenafly says older Board videos not available through the current online archive can be requested through the district’s OPRA process.

Student records

Do not treat individual student records as ordinary Board meeting records. Use the appropriate school or district private-record route.

Quick fixes

Common Tenafly BOE and school-calendar mistakes

I found an older 8 p.m. meeting reference

Use the current 2026–27 meeting page. It states that closed session begins at 6 p.m. and regular public open session begins at 7 p.m. unless otherwise noted.

The agenda is not online yet

Tenafly says new agendas are posted after 4 p.m. Friday before the meeting and no later than 48 hours in advance.

I assumed my address determines my elementary school

The current registration page says elementary placement is based on space availability, not location.

I forgot to finalize Genesis registration

The district specifically instructs families to click β€œFinalize Registration Information” so the submission is received.

I need transportation but live near school

Compare your grade and district-measured walking distance with the current eligibility rules rather than estimating mileage yourself.

I want to complain directly to the Board

Review Tenafly’s published chain of command first. Many classroom and school matters should begin with the teacher or principal.
