What changed since the older Ohio County article?
The old Board member list is stale
Molly Aderholt’s Board term ended in June 2026. Jerry Ames was sworn in during the July 2026 Board transition.
Current leadership
David Croft remains Board President. Andy Garber is Board Vice President.
Student Services changed
Andrea Trio is now Student Services Director. Raquel McLeod moved to Attendance Director.
2026–27 calendar is now published
The district document library now lists an official file named OCS Calendar 26-27.
Freshness matters on this page: the district’s general Board page was still displaying Molly Aderholt during this August 14, 2026 audit even though newer July district/news information confirms Jerry Ames’ swearing-in. When two official-facing pages disagree, use the newer dated information and verify again before formal use.

Ohio County Schools uses BoardDocs for current Board materials. Recent regular 2026 agendas commonly show a 6:00 p.m. start, but date, time and location are not safe to assume from one previous meeting.
| Resource | What it tells you | When to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Agenda | Planned meeting business, items and attachments. | Before attending or following an issue. |
| Minutes | Formal written meeting record after posting. | To confirm recorded Board action. |
| Meeting video | Discussion and presentation context. | When you need more context than the minutes provide. |
| Board page | Links to current and archived resources. | When you do not know which record you need. |

Attachments can contain the detail that is missing from a simple agenda title.
Use minutes for the recorded outcome
An agenda shows what was planned; it does not prove the final action taken.
Public-meeting privacy: avoid disclosing confidential student health, disability, discipline, custody or personally identifying information during open public discussion.

The official district document library now lists two academic calendar PDFs: OCS Calendar 25-26 and OCS Calendar 26-27. For 2026–27 planning, select the 26–27 file.
Academic calendar
Use OCS Calendar 26-27 for the district’s current school-year calendar.

Use the district Events page for activities and event-level updates.
Closings & changes
Use current Live Feed messages for weather, delayed dismissal and other operational changes.
Calendar-development context: a March 2026 proposal called for students to start August 26, 2026 and end May 28, 2027, with a two-week winter break and shorter spring break. That was presented as a proposal; the published OCS Calendar 26-27 PDF is the document families should use for final planning.
Major SERP trap: searches for “Ohio County Schools calendar 2026–27” prominently surface pages for Ohio County Schools in Kentucky. Do not use a Kentucky calendar for Wheeling, West Virginia.

Open the current Ohio County Schools directory →Ohio County Schools enrollment, Pre-K, kindergarten and special permission
Enrollment is not one single form. The right route depends on the child’s age, residence and whether the family is asking for the assigned attendance-area school or special permission for another school.
Regular enrollment
Open the district enrollment forms
Use Student Services rather than a third-party registration packet.
Confirm the complete paperwork list
The district specifically tells families to contact Student Services to make sure all appropriate paperwork is ready.
Contact the assigned school for student-specific questions
School staff can help with campus-level registration, schedule and first-day details.
Kindergarten
Age rule
A child must be five years old before July 1 of the year the child enters kindergarten.
Birth record
The district says families must present an original birth certificate from the Office of Vital Statistics.
Health record
Immunization documentation is also part of school-entry preparation.
West Virginia Pre-K
Want another school?
Live inside Ohio County
Use the in-county Special Permission Application when requesting a school outside your residence attendance area.
Live outside the district
Use the separate out-of-county Special Permission Application.
Approval is not guaranteed. Ohio County Schools says special-permission decisions are discretionary. When granted, permission continues through K–5 without annual reapplication, but a new application is required for the transition from fifth to sixth grade.
Student Services is the district hub for all three workflows.
Open Ohio County Schools Student Services →What parents should do when an Ohio County student is absent
Ohio County Schools uses Care Calls to connect with families of absent students. Parents are also encouraged to call the school themselves rather than waiting for the school to make contact.
Notify the school
Tell the school that the child will be absent and ask what documentation is needed.
Ask about missed work
The district encourages families to arrange homework and learn how missed work should be completed.
Address repeated absences early
Teachers, principals, counselors, attendance staff, school psychologists and social workers may all be part of the support route.
Do not rely blindly on the old attendance-policy page. That page contains very old adoption/revision dates. For a disputed absence or current excused-absence rule, ask the school or Attendance office for the current policy governing the 2026–27 year.
Ohio County student work permits and age certificates
Ages 14–15
The district explains a work-permit process involving the prospective employer, parent and school. During summer, the Board office can complete the school portion for OCS students.
Ages 16–17
Student Services also explains the age-certificate workflow, including proof-of-age and authorized issuance.
Employment rules are state regulated. Use the West Virginia Division of Labor for the current child-labor rule after using Student Services to understand the local school paperwork.
How Ohio County parents can read Schoology grades and status symbols
Ohio County Schools uses Schoology for assignments, grades, calendars and communication. The district says teachers begin entering grades in Schoology starting in third grade.
Orange hexagon
The assignment is missing.
Paper + orange hexagon
The assignment was submitted but has not yet been graded.
Green-filled hexagon
The student is exempt from the assignment.
No parent access?
Contact the child’s school
The district says the school can provide the access code needed for a parent account.
Use the district-linked Schoology route
Avoid typing school credentials into an unrelated Schoology result.
Check both “grades” and “courses”
Those sections can reveal grades, missing work, assignments, resources and teacher updates.
Ohio County Schools explains parent access and communication tools on its official Communication page.
Open Ohio County Schools communication and Schoology help →How to find an Ohio County school bus number, stop and time
The district operates 31 regular buses and five special-needs buses. Route information is organized by school rather than by one giant countywide list.
Select the child’s school
Elementary, middle and high-school route information is separated.
Find the bus number
Review the route table for that school.
Open “Route Stops and Times”
The district specifically uses this link for exact stop and timing details.
Use a Bus Request Form when required
The Transportation page also provides a district bus-request form.
Transportation
Driver training
OCS lists classroom training, first aid, CPR, defensive driving, testing, annual physicals and screening requirements.
Vehicle checks
The district describes daily driver checks, twice-yearly state inspections and monthly district maintenance inspections.
Never infer a route from a neighbor. Similar addresses can still have different school assignments, bus numbers, stop locations or schedules.
Use the live Bus Schedules page rather than a screenshot from a prior school year.
Open Ohio County Schools bus schedules →Free meals, extra milk, SchoolCafé and special dietary needs
Ohio County Schools currently says it participates in the USDA Community Eligibility Provision (CEP), allowing students to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch each school day.
| Meal / item | District information | Important note |
|---|---|---|
| Student breakfast | One free breakfast | CEP |
| Student lunch | One free lunch | CEP |
| Extra milk | $0.50 per half pint | Separate purchase |
| Adult / visitor breakfast | $4.00 | Verify before purchase |
| Adult / visitor lunch | $5.00 | Verify before purchase |
Old meal debt and SchoolCafé
The district says previously accrued unpaid meal debt remains the responsibility of the parent or guardian. Its billing page also offers SchoolCafé for online cafeteria payments, account balances and automatic payments.
Billing-page freshness warning: the district billing page still contains some explicit 2025–26 wording. Do not assume every payment or charging statement automatically carries into 2026–27 without checking Child Nutrition.
Medical diet vs food preference
Medically prescribed diet
The district can accommodate qualifying medical diets through its Medical Plan of Care for School Foodservice process.
Personal food preference
The district says preferences such as vegetarianism are not handled through the medical special-diet accommodation process.
Use the district nutrition page for the current program and menu links.
Open Ohio County Schools Child Nutrition →Start with the district’s Special Dietary Needs instructions before sending a note or form.
Open special dietary-needs forms and instructions →Ohio County school health records, immunization, screenings and clinic help
The district Health Services page covers immunization records, physical and dental documentation, school screenings, dental care and other student-health resources.
School immunization
West Virginia law requires school-entry immunization against specified diseases unless the applicable state exemption process applies.
Physical & dental records
The district page identifies current physical and dental documentation for kindergarten, seventh-grade and twelfth-grade students.
Dental clinic
The district operates a dental clinic at Madison School for eligible Ohio County children who otherwise lack access to routine dental care.
Important TB accuracy warning: the current Ohio County Schools Health Services page still says each student needs proof of a recent TB test before enrollment. Current West Virginia Code, however, describes selective testing when there is reason to suspect exposure or symptoms and notes the move away from routine testing of low-risk populations. Because the district webpage and current state law do not read the same way, families should confirm the actual 2026–27 requirement with the school nurse or health department rather than obtaining a TB test solely from the old webpage wording.
School-based health center
Ohio County Schools and WVU Medicine opened a part-time school-based health center at Madison Elementary in September 2025 for minor, non-emergency medical concerns with parental permission.
The opening announcement described operation two days per week for four hours each day. Because clinic schedules can change, confirm the current days and hours before relying on that original launch schedule.
Use the current district Health Services page and confirm any uncertain requirement with the school nurse.
Open Ohio County Schools Health Services →Referral, initial evaluation, eligibility and IEP timeline
Ohio County Schools says eligible students ages three through 21 must have access to a free appropriate public education. Parents are specifically identified as one source that may initiate a request for an initial special-education evaluation.
Raise the concern
Referral sources can include parents, school intervention teams, developmental screening and private/religious schools.
Document parental consent
The district timeline begins from the documented date written parental consent for the initial evaluation is received.
Evaluation and eligibility
Within 80 days of that documented date, the district generally must conduct the full individual initial evaluation and convene an eligibility committee.
IEP when eligible
The IEP documents the student’s needs, goals, services and educational supports agreed through the IEP process.
80 days is not an unconditional deadline in every situation. The district lists exceptions, including repeated failure/refusal to make the student available and certain transfers between districts. Individual cases should be handled through the Special Education office and applicable procedural safeguards.
Reevaluation: the district timeline says reevaluation generally occurs within three years of the last eligibility meeting, or more frequently when a parent/teacher requests it or conditions warrant.
Use the district’s Special Education page for the detailed process and parent resources.
Open Ohio County Schools Special Education →Need housing, food, medical, tutoring or family-support help?
Ohio County Schools’ Communities In Schools program connects students and families with community support that can address barriers to attendance and learning.
Housing support
CIS can help connect struggling families with community resources related to secure housing.
Medical support
Community connections may help families reach needed medical resources.
Food & tutoring
The district identifies food assistance and tutoring among the support categories CIS can help connect.
If an attendance or academic problem is being driven by a larger family barrier, asking the school whether a Communities In Schools coordinator can help may be more productive than treating the symptom alone.
The district publishes current Communities In Schools information and site coordinators.
Open Ohio County Schools Communities In Schools →Closings, delays, delayed dismissal and non-traditional learning days
A printed calendar cannot tell you what is happening during today’s storm or emergency. Ohio County Schools uses its Live Feed and school communication tools for operational changes.
Closure
Check whether the district identifies the day as a traditional closure or non-traditional instructional day.
NTID
During 2026 NTID announcements, older students used remote work while younger students used prepared learning packets.
Delayed dismissal
OCS also uses Live Feed for real-time safety changes such as holding students until severe weather passes.
Use the Live Feed rather than an old calendar screenshot.
