Harrison County Schools partial state intervention explained
On July 8, 2026, the West Virginia Board of Education approved a partial intervention involving Harrison County Schools.
This is important governance information, but it does not mean families should stop using Harrison County Schools for school calendars, teachers, enrollment, buses, WVEIS, meals or other normal student services.
Administrator hiring
State Superintendent authority includes hiring of administrators and principals.

Certain major financial decisions fall within the intervention authority.
Board decisions
Some county Board decision-making is subject to State Superintendent authority or approval.
What the district reported after intervention began
For a parent: continue using your child’s school and normal HCS systems. The intervention matters most when interpreting major governance, finance, leadership and district-level personnel decisions.

Most important calendar rule: Harrison County’s current text calendar says only OS Days may be converted into instructional days. Do not treat an OS Day as a guaranteed vacation date after severe weather or other lost instructional time.

Graduation dates come from the annual district calendar, but ceremony time, venue, guest/ticket rules and weather arrangements should be confirmed with the high school closer to graduation.

Recent regular Board meetings have commonly been scheduled at 6:00 p.m. in the Board Room at 445 W Main Street, but organizational, special, hearing and other meeting types can use different times or locations.

The Board approved 2026–27 meeting dates on June 16, 2026, but the meeting recap also noted that a March 16 date needed review because of state basketball scheduling. That is another reason to verify the live calendar instead of hard-coding every Board date into a permanent article.

Standard 2026–27 registration is for children who were 4 years old by June 30, 2026.
Kindergarten
Children who were 5 years old before July 1, 2026 are eligible.

The current Pre-K page says a birth certificate can be ordered at registration for $12 by check or money order; no cash is accepted.

Kindergarten: do existing HCS Pre-K students register again?
The district says children who attended a Harrison County preschool program such as Head Start, Mother Goose, Lasting Impressions or Cubby’s do not need to register again for Kindergarten.
The scheduled spring registration events have passed. If you still need to enroll for 2026–27, contact the child’s home school for the current late/new-enrollment process rather than assuming enrollment is closed.

Students entering Pre-K, Kindergarten, Grade 2, Grade 7 or Grade 12 must show proof of the required comprehensive health examination.
