New Haven Board of Education: Calendar, Meetings & Local School Help

The New Haven Board of Education oversees New Haven Public Schools, but families usually arrive with a much more specific question: When is the next Board meeting? Where is the district office? Which calendar should I use? Where do I register a student or check transportation?

This independent guide separates those tasks so New Haven families, students, staff and residents can move directly to the right official NHPS or City of New Haven source instead of relying on an old agenda or general search result.

Agendas, minutes and remote access

How to find the correct New Haven BOE meeting record

New Haven uses a Diligent public-meeting portal for current Board and committee materials. It is a better starting point than searching directly for a PDF because the portal ties the meeting date to the agenda, members and meeting information.

1

Open the Diligent portal

Use the New Haven School District public meeting portal linked from NHPS.

2

Select the exact meeting

Distinguish a regular Board meeting from a special meeting, grievance/hearing meeting or committee meeting.

3

Read the live meeting page

Use the meeting page for the agenda, members and any posted Zoom or telephone access information.

4

Use minutes for the official record

An agenda tells you what is scheduled. It does not by itself establish what action the Board ultimately took.

5

Check again on meeting day

Hybrid access, agenda material or meeting status can change after an earlier calendar listing was published.

Hybrid meeting tip: the City describes regular meetings as hybrid, and official Diligent meeting pages can provide electronic-access details. Use the live page rather than copying an old Zoom password from a previous meeting.

Current board

New Haven Board of Education members

The City’s current Boards & Commissions listing shows a nine-member structure that includes elected members, mayor-appointed members, the mayor as an ex-officio member and student representatives.

Name Current role / route Current term information
Dr. Orlando Yarborough III President; mayoral appointee Current term listed through Dec. 31, 2029.
Matthew Wilcox Mayoral appointee Current listing runs through Dec. 31, 2026.
Dr. Edward Joyner District 1 elected representative Current term listed through Dec. 31, 2027.
Andrea Downer District 2 elected representative Current term listed through Dec. 31, 2027.
Dr. Abie Quinones-Benitez Mayoral appointee Current term listed through Dec. 31, 2029.
Daniel F. Juarez Mayoral appointee Current listing runs through Dec. 31, 2028.
Justin Elicker Mayor; ex-officio Board member Ex-officio position tied to the mayoralty.
Abdellah Aly Student representative City listing shows July 1, 2025–June 30, 2027.
Daniela McTiernan Huge Student representative City listing shows June 30, 2026–June 30, 2028.

Why two student names appear: New Haven has a formal student Board-representative system. Student membership is therefore part of the local Board structure rather than a general youth advisory note.

Student representation

New Haven students also elect Board representatives

Student representation is a distinctive part of New Haven’s Board structure. NHPS runs student elections and publishes a Student Elections for BOE section for that process.

2026 student election

NHPS opened voting at district high schools from May 26 through May 28, 2026 to select the next student Board representative.

Daniela McTiernan Huge

NHPS reported that Wilbur Cross High School student Daniela β€œDani” McTiernan Huge won the 2026 election and was later sworn in as a student Board member.

2026–27 school year

New Haven Public Schools calendar, events and bell times

The school-year calendar is separate from the Board meeting calendar. NHPS currently provides 2026–27 calendar and bell-time resources for families, while its Events page mixes district events, Board meetings and other activities.

First day of school

NHPS announced Monday, August 31, 2026 as the first day of school for the 2026–27 school year.

Bell times

The Students & Families section includes a dedicated 2026–2027 School Bell Times resource. Check your child’s school because start and dismissal times vary.

Live events

NHPS Events is useful for Board meetings, committee meetings, early-dismissal notices and district activities that are not simply β€œdays off” on an academic calendar.

School-year planning: use the official 10-month attendance/calendar resource.
Board meeting: use NHPS Events plus the Diligent meeting portal.
Bell time: use the 2026–27 School Bell Times page, not an old school’s prior-year schedule.
School-specific event: check the individual school’s event page.
Emergency or live update: check the NHPS Live Feed and your school’s communication channels.
Enrollment

New Haven Public Schools enrollment routes

NHPS separates enrollment into several tasks instead of one universal form. Families can use the district’s enrollment area for online student registration, School Choice, homeschooling, kindergarten waiver information and school-transfer requests.

Online Student Registration

Use this route when enrolling a student directly in New Haven Public Schools.

School Choice Enrollment

New Haven has a separate School Choice process for magnet and choice-school applications. Do not treat general district registration as the same process.

Kindergarten waiver

NHPS lists a dedicated Kindergarten Waiver Process under Enrollment for families whose situation requires that route.

School transfer

Existing NHPS families seeking a transfer should use the district’s transfer information rather than starting a new-student application.

Documents can depend on the enrollment route: the accessible official pages reviewed for this article confirmed the registration sections but did not expose a complete current document checklist in crawlable text. Use the live NHPS registration instructions rather than a third-party document list.

Transportation

New Haven high-school transportation changed for 2026–27

A major current-year change is the district’s high-school bus opt-in system. NHPS said high-school students who needed a district bus for 2026–27 had to request a seat instead of automatically receiving an assignment.

Opt-in requirement

High-school bus service moved to an opt-in system for the 2026–27 school year.

Ride-frequency agreement

Students who signed up were required to agree to ride the bus at least three times per week.

June 18 deadline

The main sign-up deadline was June 18, 2026. That date has passed, but the late-registration rule is still useful for families joining during the school year.

Late sign-up rule

NHPS said late applicants would be placed at an existing stop on an existing route, and requests for a closer stop would not be accepted.

Transportation Office 475-220-1601
Route notification Families who completed the opt-in process were told to expect route and pickup information by email.

New high-school student? do not assume there is automatically a bus assignment. Contact NHPS Transportation or the student’s high school to confirm the current-year process.

Committee meetings

New Haven BOE committees have their own meeting calendars

Not every public education meeting is a full Board meeting. NHPS maintains separate public-meeting routes for several committees, each of which may publish its own agenda, schedule or location.

Finance & Operations

Budget, operational and financial matters move through this committee before or alongside full Board action.

Governance Committee

Board governance and related policy matters can appear on the Governance Committee calendar.

Teaching & Learning

Instructional and academic matters have a separate Teaching & Learning public-meeting route.

Head Start Subcommittee

Head Start matters are handled through a dedicated subcommittee with its own meeting documents.

Food Service Task Force

Food-service issues can appear here rather than on a normal Board meeting agenda.

Citywide School Building & Stewardship

School buildings and stewardship matters have a separate public-meeting route.

Policies and records

Board records are different from student records

NHPS publishes Board policies and public-meeting material online. Those public governance records should not be confused with confidential student files such as grades, health records or individual discipline information.

Board records

Use the meeting portal for agendas, meeting material and Board records tied to public meetings.

Board policies

The district maintains a Board Policies document area organized by policy series.

Student records

Use the student’s school or the appropriate NHPS records route. Do not request private student information through public Board participation.

Troubleshooting

Common New Haven Board of Education search problems

You found North Haven or West Haven: confirm the district name says New Haven Public Schools and the main address is 54 Meadow Street.
You found an old agenda: return to the Diligent meeting portal and select the current meeting rather than using a cached PDF.
The calendar says β€œBoard meeting” but no agenda appears: the district Events page and meeting portal serve different purposes. Open the Diligent meeting record for agenda material.
You need a school-day calendar: use the 2026–27 school calendar, not the Board meeting calendar.
You are a high-school family looking for a bus: 2026–27 high-school transportation is opt-in. Contact Transportation instead of assuming an automatic assignment.
You need to enroll a child: use Online Student Registration or the specific School Choice/transfer route rather than contacting a Board member.
You want to speak about a private student issue: contact the school or district privately rather than placing confidential details into a public meeting record.
