2026β27 Calendar, Board Governance & Family Action Guide
Nicholas County Board of Education searches can surface Kentucky results, outdated Board rosters, last year’s bus routes and older school-calendar information. This guide covers Nicholas County Schools in West Virginia and explains an especially important current fact: the county continues to operate within West Virginia Board of Education state-intervention oversight.
Use this guide to verify 2026β27 dates, understand who currently governs what, check Board members and meeting records, find schools, register a student, prepare Pre-K documents, confirm transportation, request transcripts or student records, reach Special Education or Title IX staff, use homeschool and WVEIS resources, find meals, jobs and family forms, and avoid stale district pages.

Why Nicholas County Schools is under state intervention
The West Virginia Board of Education determined in May 2025 that extraordinary circumstances existed in Nicholas County Schools and issued immediate state intervention.
As part of the intervention, state action changed county leadership. State Superintendent Michele Blatt appointed Scott Cochran as Nicholas County Superintendent in May 2025.
Still active in 2026: at the June 3, 2026 WVBE meeting, Nicholas County was reported as one of the counties that remain under full state intervention. The state said intervention counties must provide updates at least every six months and that WVDE would continue working with county leadership.
What state intervention means for a reader
Local pages are not enough
Governance research should include both Nicholas County Schools and current WVBE/WVDE intervention records.
Old leadership pages can mislead
Search engines can still surface a Members-page version naming former Superintendent Terrence Beam.
Status is not permanent by assumption
Recheck WVBE updates because state intervention can later be modified or ended through state action.
Use WVDE’s intervention and Special Circumstance Review resources instead of relying only on county webpages.
Read the WVBE intervention notice β Open Special Circumstance Reviews βCurrent Nicholas County Board member page vs West Virginia law
The live district Members page checked for this update displays Superintendent Scott Cochran and four local Board-member names.
| Name | Role shown on live district page |
|---|---|
| Chip Perrine | President |
| Roy Moose | Vice President |
| Rick Green | Member |
| Freddie Seabolt | Member |
Why only four names? West Virginia Code Β§18-5-1 provides that each county board is composed of five members. The current live Nicholas County page displays only four local Board-member names. This guide does not invent the identity or status of a fifth seat. Verify the latest agenda/minutes or call the Board office when the complete current roster matters.
Search-index conflict: an older indexed version of the same official page still lists former Superintendent Terrence Beam along with Philip Berry and Steve Ferguson. That older search result should not override the live page.
Vacancy context: district school feeds also surfaced a βBoard Member Vacancyβ announcement during 2025. That historical notice does not by itself prove a vacancy still exists in August 2026, which is why the newest meeting record is the safest tie-breaker.
Check the live member page and newest meeting documents immediately before sending formal correspondence.
Open current Nicholas County Members page βCounty Board membership, terms, vacancies and meetings
Five members
West Virginia county boards are composed of five members.
Four-year terms
Elected county Board terms are generally four years.
Terms begin
July 1 following the primary election at which a member is elected.
Vacancies
State law contains a process for filling a county Board vacancy.
Board organization: following each biennial primary election, county Boards organize on the first Monday of July and elect a president from their membership for a two-year term.
Nicholas County Board meetings and official records
Nicholas County’s site separates Minutes and Agendas, Live Board Meeting Links and Past Board Meetings. That is more reliable than using a search result for an old News post.
No invented 2026 recurring meeting schedule: the indexed News archive still prominently shows 2025 meetings. This article does not extrapolate those dates into a 2026 schedule.
Open Minutes and Agendas
Find the newest posted meeting document.
Identify the meeting type
Determine whether the notice is for a regular, special or other properly noticed meeting.
Confirm time and location
Past meetings often used the Board Office, but the individual notice should control.
Use the live meeting link
The district maintains a separate livestream resource.
Read minutes afterward
Use the official record when verifying final action, member attendance or a vote.
Roster tip: the newest meeting record is also one of the best sources for resolving the current five-seat Board roster question.
Nicholas County Schools 2026β27 important dates
Nicholas County’s newer βSchool Year at a Glanceβ provides a clearer family-facing summary than the older wording that remained in the original article.
Kβ12 first day
August 13, 2026
Pre-K first day
August 20, 2026
Scheduled last day
May 24, 2027
Graduations
Richwood High May 20; Nicholas County High May 21.
Old article correction: May 25, 2027 should not be described as the currently scheduled last student day. The newer district flyer lists May 24 as the scheduled last day and May 25 as a Professional Development/Faculty Senate day with no school for students.
Professional Development / Faculty Senate days with no school
Main holidays and breaks
| Date | No-school event |
|---|---|
| September 7, 2026 | Labor Day |
| November 3, 2026 | Election Day |
| November 11, 2026 | Veterans Day |
| November 23β27, 2026 | Thanksgiving Break |
| December 21, 2026βJanuary 1, 2027 | Winter Break |
| January 18, 2027 | Martin Luther King Jr. Day |
| March 29βApril 2, 2027 | Spring Break |
| May 31, 2027 | Memorial Day |
OSE make-up days: the district flyer identifies April 1β2 and June 1β4 as OSE days that may be used if missed instructional time must be recovered.
Why rechecking matters: weather changed multiple 2025β26 instructional dates and pushed that year’s final student day. Treat May 24, 2027 as the scheduled last day, not an immutable date.

Future consolidation: WVBE approved the closure/consolidation of Glade Creek Elementary, Summersville Elementary and Summersville Middle into the new Summersville Academic Complex PreKβ8, scheduled for completion for the 2027β28 school year.
2026β27 status: the future consolidation should not be rewritten as if those three schools have already closed. Use current Nicholas County school communication for today’s assignment and attendance.
Enrollment and transfer forms
| Situation | Use | Important check |
|---|---|---|
| New student | Student Enrollment Form | Confirm the student’s home-area school and required supporting documents. |
| Spanish-language registration | Student Enrollment Form in Spanish | Download the current district file. |
| Student entering from outside Nicholas County | Student Transfer to Nicholas County | Approval rules may apply. |
| Nicholas student requesting another county school | In County School Transfer Form | Do not use the incoming-county form. |
Do not send enrollment documents to BoardofEducations.org. Residency, custody, medical and identity records should go only through the school or official district process.
Nicholas County Pre-K and kindergarten requirements for 2026β27
Nicholas County says preschool and kindergarten registration for 2026β27 is open. Preschool is a free collaborative program offered through Nicholas County Schools and community partners.
Pre-K eligibility
Children age 3 or 4 before July 1, 2026, plus certain 5-year-olds who have not previously attended a WV Universal Pre-K program.
Kindergarten eligibility
Child must be 5 before July 1, 2026.
Early Childhood contact
Sarah Keiper β’ 304-872-3611 ext. 1251.
Documents families should gather
Expired event dates: Pre-K-to-K transition events and July 2026 Kinderboost dates have passed. Families registering after those events should contact their home-area school or Early Childhood office instead of following an old event flyer.
Bus routes, delays and transportation help
The district’s current parent library contains the 2026β27 approved school calendar but still displays a bus-route file labeled 2025β2026 Bus Routes.
Do not treat that PDF as a verified 2026β27 route schedule. Until the district visibly posts a current-year route document, confirm a child’s stop, pickup time and route through Transportation or current school communication.
Transportation Director
Jason Hypes.
Transportation Supervisor
Eugena Brown β’ 304-872-3611 ext. 1234.
Same-day update
Use the Live Feed for incidents, delays, driver shortages and emergency changes.
Before calling Transportation
Why Live Feed matters: Nicholas County has used it for bus delays caused by traffic accidents and for past driver-shortage route cancellations. A static route file cannot show those changes.
School closings, delays and calendar make-up changes
Countywide closure
Use official district and state closing notices.
Bus-only issue
A route can be delayed or cancelled while schools remain open.
Single-school issue
Power or another facility problem can affect one school without a countywide closure.
Make-up history matters: Nicholas County changed multiple 2025β26 calendar dates because of weather and ultimately moved that year’s final student day. Recheck spring 2027 dates before booking nonrefundable travel.
Transcript vs student-record request
Request For Transcripts
Use this when the requested document is specifically an academic transcript.
Request For Student Records
Use the broader records process when the needed document extends beyond an academic transcript.
Before submitting
No invented processing promise: because the indexed navigation does not clearly publish one universal transcript fee or turnaround time, this guide does not manufacture either.
Attendance help and truancy support
Nicholas County maintains an Attendance department and Attendance Matters resources. For ordinary daily attendance, the student’s school is normally the fastest first contact.
Single absence
Contact the school and follow its current excuse/documentation process.
Repeated absence
Ask the school/district about attendance intervention and support rather than waiting for the problem to grow.
District specialist
Michael Williams is listed as Coordinator of Social Worker / Truancy Diversion Specialist, ext. 1248.
Bus-related absence: past Nicholas County notices have instructed families affected by a cancelled district bus route to send a note explaining the transportation issue. For 2026β27, confirm the school’s current procedure rather than assuming an old notice still controls.
Nicholas County Special Education contacts
Start with the student team
Teacher, case manager and school administration have the student’s current program information.
Define the issue
Evaluation, IEP implementation, behavior, testing, Medicaid/compliance and psychological questions involve different specialists.
Escalate to district support
Contact the appropriate Special Education staff member when the school-level issue requires central-office involvement.
Protect student privacy: IEPs, evaluations, diagnoses, psychological reports and Medicaid/medical information should only be sent through an appropriate official school or district process.
How to report discrimination or sexual harassment
Nicholas County states that a discrimination or sexual-harassment report may be made in person, by mail, telephone or email and may be made at any time using the listed coordinator contact information.
Formal resources: the district’s Title IX page also contains its complaint form, grievance/complaint procedure, Title IX policy, nondiscrimination policy and training resources.
Homeschool, virtual school, Mountain State Academy and WVEIS
| Need | Current district resource | Important caution |
|---|---|---|
| Begin homeschooling | Homeschool Notice of Intent | Use current West Virginia requirements. |
| End-of-year homeschool evidence | End of School Year Academic Assessment | Confirm current submission rules. |
| Nicholas virtual program | NC Virtual School FAQ / agreement | Navigation still includes an older 2025 request label; verify the 2026β27 application route. |
| Mountain State Academy | Parent Guide + 2026β27 MSA calendar | Use the academy’s own calendar rather than the standard Nicholas calendar when applicable. |
| Grades | WVEIS Gradebook | Begin from the Nicholas County website to reduce login/phishing risk. |
Homeschooled state testing: Nicholas County posted a separate 2026 WVGSA/SAT School Day request for homeschooled students. Testing requests are year-specific, so do not carry a 2026 deadline into 2027.
Nicholas County parent document chooser

WVEIS, School Cash Online and phishing awareness
WVEIS Gradebook
Parent/student grade access is linked from the district site.
School Cash Online
A district-linked payment resource is available through Nicholas County navigation.
Start from the district
Use Nicholas County’s own website to reach login or payment services rather than searching for a login page by name.
Phishing history: Nicholas County has previously warned users about phishing emails impersonating district leadership. Do not send phone numbers, passwords, banking information or student information merely because an email displays a superintendent’s name.
School menus and meal information
Nicholas County’s Child Nutrition page says menus are posted monthly and can change depending on food-item availability.
Menus
Use the current menu site rather than a previous month’s screenshot.
Director
Sherrie Moul.
Phone
304-872-3611 ext. 1235.
Do not carry summer-meal information into fall: the district’s 2026 Summer Food Service Program ran June 22 through July 24. Those summer sites/dates are no longer the current school-year meal schedule.
Medication and student health resources
Medication at school
The district’s School Information and Forms page includes a Medication at School form.
Health procedures
The School Health area provides basic and specialized health-care procedure resources.
Privacy
Medical instructions and records should go only to the school/district’s designated official process.
Federal Programs and current Title I schools
Nicholas County explains that Title I supports qualifying schools with additional instruction, staff support, family engagement and other resources.
Nicholas County Schools jobs
The Work For Us area separates live vacancies from job-description libraries. Do not freeze a vacancy count in an evergreen article because openings change throughout the year.
Open positions
Use the district-linked current application system.
Professional jobs
Review professional job descriptions for qualifications and duties.
Service jobs
Use the service-job library for nonprofessional classifications.
Current posting controls: a job title appearing in Google or an old PDF does not prove the application window is still open.
