Why Nicholas County Schools is under state intervention
The West Virginia Board of Education determined in May 2025 that extraordinary circumstances existed in Nicholas County Schools and issued immediate state intervention.
As part of the intervention, state action changed county leadership. State Superintendent Michele Blatt appointed Scott Cochran as Nicholas County Superintendent in May 2025.
Still active in 2026: at the June 3, 2026 WVBE meeting, Nicholas County was reported as one of the counties that remain under full state intervention. The state said intervention counties must provide updates at least every six months and that WVDE would continue working with county leadership.

Why only four names? West Virginia Code §18-5-1 provides that each county board is composed of five members. The current live Nicholas County page displays only four local Board-member names. This guide does not invent the identity or status of a fifth seat. Verify the latest agenda/minutes or call the Board office when the complete current roster matters.
Search-index conflict: an older indexed version of the same official page still lists former Superintendent Terrence Beam along with Philip Berry and Steve Ferguson. That older search result should not override the live page.
Vacancy context: district school feeds also surfaced a “Board Member Vacancy” announcement during 2025. That historical notice does not by itself prove a vacancy still exists in August 2026, which is why the newest meeting record is the safest tie-breaker.

Why rechecking matters: weather changed multiple 2025–26 instructional dates and pushed that year’s final student day. Treat May 24, 2027 as the scheduled last day, not an immutable date.

Nicholas County Career and Technical Center and additional alternative/learning programs operate through the district.
Future consolidation: WVBE approved the closure/consolidation of Glade Creek Elementary, Summersville Elementary and Summersville Middle into the new Summersville Academic Complex PreK–8, scheduled for completion for the 2027–28 school year.
2026–27 status: the future consolidation should not be rewritten as if those three schools have already closed. Use current Nicholas County school communication for today’s assignment and attendance.

Nicholas County says preschool and kindergarten registration for 2026–27 is open. Preschool is a free collaborative program offered through Nicholas County Schools and community partners.

Expired event dates: Pre-K-to-K transition events and July 2026 Kinderboost dates have passed. Families registering after those events should contact their home-area school or Early Childhood office instead of following an old event flyer.
Bus routes, delays and transportation help
The district’s current parent library contains the 2026–27 approved school calendar but still displays a bus-route file labeled 2025–2026 Bus Routes.
Do not treat that PDF as a verified 2026–27 route schedule. Until the district visibly posts a current-year route document, confirm a child’s stop, pickup time and route through Transportation or current school communication.

Why Live Feed matters: Nicholas County has used it for bus delays caused by traffic accidents and for past driver-shortage route cancellations. A static route file cannot show those changes.
